Pure history and a great place. Would like to have seen more of the Nuclear propulsion systems but it is understandable why that end of the boat is not accessible. If your passing by New London, CT then it is worth the stop
This was a great place to visit with our kids! Going onto a submarine was really cool and it was glassed off from the working areas so felt very safe. The museum next door was also very interesting. A huge bonus was that it was totally free! Great place to visit!
Free, but be a decent person and give a donation. Very well put together and worth the short detour. Audio guided tour of about half of a nuclear powered sub. Lots of other stuff in the building - torpedoes and rockets, pictures and models, training modules for subs where you can sit at the wheel and go nuts pushing buttons. A little weird pushing buttons that say you're launching a nuclear missile, but fun.
This is the real thing! I spent over four years working on subs and my family was thrilled to get a small feeling of the environment. I'm so happy I could share that with them.
Excellent museum displays of submarine history and technology, both outdoor and indoor. USS Nautilus (1st atomic powered Navy ship) is docked at and part of museum and has an audio self-guided tour. Displays cover the complete history and future technology of naval submarines and undersea warfare. Located adjacent to main gate of US Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, CT.
